WHAT GARDEN DO YOU NEED? CHECK OUT!

Balcony Garden 2015
By Ashley Marie

It’s that time of year again- time to get gardening. This year we’re trying a few new things including lettuces and peas. Last year was quite a success considering it was our first time doing this, so we’re more prepared this time with a bit of experience. We get about a half day of sun on our 18th floor east facing balcony, but it does get it’s fair share of wind. Sturdy or low lying plants are the most successful for us, including things can can be tied down.

This year we’re starting things right with a much better heavy duty planting soil, and aiming for more trailing/climbing plants, to make things extra nice to look at even from inside the apartment. Most of our project is edible, but we’ll add a few flowers this year for asthetics.

It’s not quite done yet, but so far we’ve got: curly parsley, marjoram, sweet banana peppers, cayenne peppers, two varieties of oregano, two varieties of mint, red leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce, snow peas, three varieties of basil (including globe, which I’m excited about), bougainvillea, and three varieties of tomatoes. We’ll definitely be adding more florals (hopefully nasturtium) and cilantro.

Maybe beans I’m thinking…
I’ll share more details about each of the different varieties later as the plants start fruiting, and we get a better look at what’s successful this year and what (if anything) becomes a fail!

Stay tuned...
