A 20-Year-Old’s Tattoo About Depression Goes Viral (Photos)

Bekah Miles shows the double side of depression with her clever leg tattoo…..

Depression is often considered a difficult subject to talk about. But a 20-year-old student has just tackled it in the most creative and poignant way.

Bekah Miles, a student at George Fox University, decided to get a tattoo to depict the struggles that come with tackling depression. And after posting it to her Facebook page, it’s gone totally viral.

The large inking, that Bekah got stamped onto her left thigh, has a clever double meaning. To any other person looking at Bekah, it reads: ‘I’m fine’. But to her, when read from above, it reads: ‘Save me’.

Miles shared her tattoo on Facebook with a caption to explain her decision. It read:

‘Dear mom and dad, please don’t kill me over this permanent choice. I want you to hear me out. Today, I am coming out with something that only few of you know. I am ready to have a conversation about my mental illness.

‘Last year, I was diagnosed with depression. And in all honesty, I believe it was a problem for quite a while before that, but I think it just got worse to the point of hardly functioning.

The 20-year-old’s tattoo has gone viral after being shared on Facebook.
She continued: ‘So today, I got this tattoo. I feel that my leg was the best place for the meaning behind it. When everyone else sees it, they see “I’m fine,” but from my viewpoint, it reads “save me.”

‘To me, it means that others see this person that seems okay, but, in reality, is not okay at all. It reminds me that people who may appear happy, may be at battle with themselves.’

Since posting the picture, it’s received nearly 400,000 likes and 322,000 shares, and Beckah’s been flooded with comments of support.

‘You have reached a lot of people with your story’, one user wrote. ‘This is great and by sharing it, your pain, I really hope you’re feeling the love back and you’re helping innumerable amount of people with it.’

So how did she come up with the idea to get the double-meaning tattoo? ‘The idea came to me after I found a suicide prevention organization, showing how difficult it is to understand and identify depressio’, Bekah revealed.

It’s certainly got us talking. Bravo for raising awareness, Bekah.
