Andy Murray’s US Open is over.

The No. 3 seed was sent packing in four sets by No. 15 Kevin Anderson in a massive fourth-round upset Monday evening.

Kevin Anderson finally reaches first Slam QF, beating Andy Murray 7-6(5), 6-3, 6-7(2), 7-6(0). All credit for surviving a wild ride.

Murray had made 18 straight grand slam quarterfinals before the loss to Anderson. He lost the first two sets of the match and was hoping to pull off another miracle comeback, as he did in Round 2 against Adrian Mannarino, winning that match in five grueling sets.

It wasn’t to be Monday night, though, as Anderson bettered him at every turn. Anderson won the fourth-set tiebreak 7-0.

I’m a little lost for words,” Anderson said after the match. “I just managed to keep my composure and, honestly, played one of the best matches of my life. To do it here in New York feels amazing.

It’s not easy playing Andy. He’s such a fighter. I knew I had to try my best to stick with him. I served very well, obviously“.
Anderson had 25 aces, and won 79 percent of his first-serve points.

Aside from his serve, Anderson’s plan was to attack the net, and he stuck to his game plan. Murray, content to bash from the baseline, approached the net only 24 times, winning 18 of those points.

In the end, Anderson came up big when he needed to, hitting 81 winners to Murray’s 49. While he made 57 unforced errors to Murray’s 20, his plan was to be aggressive and take the match to Murray – and it worked.

Murray won only three of his 11 break-point opportunities, while Anderson broke Murray four times in nine chances.
Anderson’s win is his first in eight matches in the Round of 16 at a Grand Slam. He’ll face Stan Wawrinka in the next round, and he’s won four straight against the Swiss.
