Blame it on the spaghetti.….
The Euro 2016 qualifier between Belarus and Luxembourg is in doubt after 16 of the latter national team’s players – four fifths of its squad – were hit by food poisoning in the early hours of Monday.
Marc Diederich, president of the Federation Luxembourgeoise de Football, told The Associated Press that the footballers suffered “terrible stomachaches” and spent hours in the bathroom after eating a plate of spaghetti bolognese on Sunday at the team’s hotel in the Belarusian capital of Minsk.
“We have to wait for the evolution of the situation, how our players can train today, can they train at all“, said Diederich, adding that Luxembourg has been in contact with UEFA, European football’s governing body, about the possibility of rearranging the qualifier.
UEFA has already stated that it’s aware of the issue, and that the fixture will go ahead on Tuesday as scheduled.
Luxembourg pulled off one of its greatest-ever victories on Saturday, defeating Macedonia 1-0 by virtue of a 90th-minute goal from Sebastien Thill .
